Schwinn Wayfarer 700c Women's Hybrid BikeApril, 2020

The right bike can have you motivated to spend more time outdoors, get some exercise, and enjoy some fresh air. The great thing about hybrid bikes is that you don’t have to spend a fortune to get a good one. The Wayfarer by Schwinn is equipped with some excellent features and high-quality components. It’s a bike that’s designed for speed, and it can be just the bike you need for riding around town or commuting to and from work.

Our Verdict: When it comes to hybrid bikes for women, the Wayfarer is easily one of the top three on the market. From your first ride, you’ll notice how easy this bike handles. One of the biggest reasons we reviewed this bike is because Schwinn is known for producing some of the best bikes around, while still somehow managing to keep the price affordable.  This model received a high rating, but it isn’t recommended for cyclists who want a hybrid that can handle off-road riding. Additionally, it only comes equipped with a total of seven gears, which can be a big drawback for some cyclists. Click this link for purchase details…

Overview and Features

Schwinn has been a consumer favorite for decades and they’re one of the leading hybrid bike brands. They offer a wide range of bikes designed for men, women, and children. They also offer an extensive line of women’s hybrids, providing women with more options in terms of color, size, style, and design.

Their line of hybrid bikes is popular with beginners mainly because the shifter systems are very easy to use, the prices are reasonable and the bikes arrived mostly assembled. But the bikes have also scored well with seasoned cyclists. This hybrid in particular earned a high rating for its lightweight design combined with top of the line 700c tires that feature deep tread, which allows them to easily grip cultivated terrain, even in wet conditions.

Basically, if you’re on a tight budget and need a hybrid that’s fast, lightweight, and reliable, then this hybrid bike should be at the top of your list.

The Wayfarer is a great addition to their line and a bike that’s quickly making a reputation for itself, mainly because it’s a lightweight hybrid that’s primarily designed with speed in mind. This bike is perfect for commuting and is highly maneuverable.

This is a seven-gear bike that features a steel retro city frame that allows you to use a more comfortable riding posture.

The Wayfarer’s design leans more toward a city bike than a mountain bike. It’s lightweight, fast, and can handle daily commutes.

Tires

The tires are 700c and roll easily on pavement and other types of cultivated terrain. They also allow for easier acceleration, especially when you’re climbing a steep hill. The tires are slightly thicker than traditional 700c tires and provide excellent traction and come equipped with light aluminum alloy rims for faster riding. The tire’s deep tread may not be able to handle gravel or uneven terrain, but they can easily navigate wet city streets and other slick surfaces. These are top of the line tires that won’t require an upgrade anytime soon.

Frame

The frame is incredibly durable and designed to handle regular use. With this frame, the cyclist can sit completely upright, instead of hunched over the handlebars. This helps to minimize strain on the neck and back. The step-thru aluminum frame is also easy to get on and off. The lightweight frame is perfect for a commuter bike. Mountain bikes may be more durable than a lightweight commuter hybrid, but cyclists will also experience rider fatigue, which comes with lugging a heavy steel bike up steep terrain. This is a bike that’s built for speed. If you’re closely tracking how far you ride daily, then you’ll notice this bike allows you to easily clock more mileage.

Assembly

[ichcpt id=”88″]

As usual, Schwinn provides detailed instructions that include images and text, making them very easy to follow.

This bike will take only twenty minutes to assemble. All you need to do is attach the saddle, handlebars, and tires.

Shimano Shifters

This model comes with seven gear options, which is perfect for city riding but can be limiting if you love doing some serious off-roading. However, the bike’s power did surprise us, and it was able to handle some off-road work that we weren’t expecting. Most cyclists can agree that for commuting and recreational purposes, seven gears is more than enough. However, serious cyclists may consider the limited gears a drawback.

While it isn’t designed for off-roading on backcountry trails, it can withstand a little cycling on dirt paths.

Handlebars

The handlebars feature the traditional swept back design that you’ll find on most models of hybrid bikes. The design brings the handlebars closer to the seat, so the cyclist doesn’t have to strain to comfortably grip the handlebars. This type of posture will minimize the amount of pressure placed on the back, for a more comfortable riding experience.

Saddle

The included saddle features a spring mechanism that will prevent you from feeling every rock and bump in the road. In terms of comfort, the seat is rated as average. However, it’s definitely more comfortable than the average stock saddle. It’s also an easy, affordable upgrade if you’re looking for a saddle that offers more padding.

Brakes

For a commuter hybrid, aside from tire quality, nothing is more important than braking power. So, we were happy to see Schwinn took this into consideration adding some great brakes you can really rely on during rush hour.

This model uses rear and front alloy pull brakes that provide improved heat dissipation that minimizes the risk of brake failure. Because of the improved heat dissipation design, the brakes work to increase the tire’s lifespan by keeping them cooler. The aluminum alloy material will ensure that the brakes are protected against corrosion and rust.

Performance

This is a hybrid bike that can easily hug tight turns, weave in and out of traffic, and get you to and from work swiftly. The bike’s frame is beautifully designed, full of clean lines and all the right curves.

On cultivated terrain, including asphalt and sidewalks, the bike offers a smooth ride. The tires offer better than average traction, making the bike safe to ride in wet conditions.

However, the bike doesn’t come with a suspension fork and the 700c tires just aren’t made for uneven terrain. This means the bike won’t handle well on gravel, sandy paths, and other types of challenging terrain. With just a look, most seasoned cyclists can tell this bike is modeled after a city bike. It will work well for the cyclist who wants a reliable bike for riding around town or as a daily commuter. Considering the lightweight frame it will also work well for cyclists training for a race or for people who want a bike that can provide a challenging, fat burning workout.

Additionally, it only has seven gears, which won’t give you many options for off-road riding.

This bike isn’t for you if you’re searching for a women’s hybrid that rides like a mountain bike. While for some, this will be a deal breaker, if you’re interested in a hybrid that’s reliable and durable and perfect for commuting, you won’t find a better model than the Wayfarer.

If you want a bike that offers a more versatile riding experience, we recommend the Kent Northwoods Springdale hybrid bike.
